Are canoes boats If so, does the "boat fish don't count" rule still apply? Would a sand sissy need to add sand to the inside of the canoe to make it safe for him to fish from? Figured this would be a good topic for the trainwreck crew Jigman

I think you get some kind of partial credit for a canoe or Kayak caught fish. just kidding but seriously, ANY fish you >>>>WORKED FOR<<<< COUNTS. for example IF you GEAR UP, kayak out off the beach say 1/4-1/2 mile out, proceed to locate bait, and then bag a 50# slob with say a live bunker, it counts , as much as I now hate live bunker fishing. My biggest bass was on a live bunker too,so yes maybe there is an internal conflict there. IF I had caught that same bass on a Plug, say at night, by myself, in bad weather to boot, standing on a rock at Montauk braving the elements, I would be bragging about it every single day, but since it was on live bait off a bridge, its really not much to brag about. back to the boat Question. IMO, heres the perfect "it dont count scenario" You are a self proclaimed "surf fisherman" and you visit all the SURF FISHING sites we all do. Everyone knows your online name. You book a trip with Capt Mc Gillicutty, on the Kitty paw out of Cape whatever. You bring your coworkers or buddies along to split the charter fare. The good capt proceeds to, 1)- takes you out to his favorite bass spots,he had done all the homework and u are clueless to where you even are, u did no homework whatsoever, in fact you dont even know the tide or the moon phase. U made the reservation, thats it. 2)- The Capt provides all the bait ,rods, everything, maybe he even baits the hook for you too (then youre definitely automatically disqualified) 3)- You hook into a "fish of a lifetime" say a 55# bass. You land the fish, but the capt even gaffed it for you and also gave you some instructions while fighting the fish or you would have lost it for sure THEN, you go back to Striper********** .com or whatever site. and you BRAG about the fish of a lifetime you were so skillful in catching. You got Pictures and all, smiling faces, beer cans in the cooler, celebratory cigars, the works. You are even claiming that you are now officially in the 50# club. YOU ARE A DILLIDOCK. You did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to earn that fish. and your pictures dont impress me, and if you kept that fish, you impress me even less. That fish does not count at all, ESP when you brag about it on a SURF fishing site. Im not interested in your catch. IF this offends anyone TOUGH. Go stand on a jetty, Rock or a sandbar for a couple hours, then no matter what the size of your catch was, I will congratulate you. Cause you EARNED IT.

If you catch a 55# Bass on a spinning reel are you considered a DillyDOCK? Dillydock - that word cracks me up.

Very well put John, I don't usually read long post because it is a waste of my time, I know you know what you are talking about. Live lining bait is a credable and fun way to catch big bass it is like saying it doesn't count if you catch a big fish on a live eel. it all counts even dead sticking

Just to clear things up...Jiggy was busting on ME cause last night I picked up my first CANOE ....Tommorrow my son, JP, and I are going for the maiden voyage With gas prices being what they are and the shore scene being hit or miss , it made more sense , to me , to get the canoe, spend time with the kids fishing locally, freshwater, then resuming on the striper quest during the fall...That's my AGENDA. FIRE AWAY....

Can't say that I blame you. Some fun freshwater fishing to be had too. Small boats and canoes can get you to many places larger boats can't go. Oh, and those poppers you make, they work just fine for smallies and largemouth ;) Hope the Maiden voyage goes well Jigman

| Thanks guys, The spot we're going to is actually a trophy trout pond. I choose to go there, one , because there are no motor boats allowed, so no yahoo's buzzing us , and two because it is one of the cleanest and most beautiful places I've ever fished and want JP to enjoy it. It's been YEARS since I've been in a canoe and the first time for JP, so we're just gonna take it SLOW and enjoy the day..If we do get fish that will be a bonus Once we get used to the canoe there are lots of LMB places to hit.I'm really excited, and I know JP is to... Good luck to you guys this weekend, if yer heading out.

Well, the first outting was a SUCCESS !! JP had a ball , we got to see how the new canoe works and caught a lot of lmb. I was really pleased with the stability of the canoe and I don't know how many times JP said, this is soo cool and to top it off he caught all the big bass while dad pulled in all the twinkies . we got on the water around 8 am and didn't get the canoe back on the truck till after 5 pm...needless to say, we both slept well last night. It was a picture perfect day, water was like glass and slight wind keep bugs away. The water was SOOOO warm that not one trout was seen, I'm guessing they were all on bottom , in the middle of the pond, nice cool water , while the bass were all in the skinny water on the banks of the pond. During our pb&j lunch JP tossed some of his bread into the water to sun fish and it started a feeding frenzy, I'm not kidding , about a hundred of the little bugger's attacked the bread like pirrannah's , it was cool to see.Bottom line , it was a perfect father / son day...

WAAAAY to nice a set up for a twelve year old , ah , he's a good kid , why not spoil him? Now he's mad cause i'm painting in the basement , instead of paddling him around...I CAN'T win...

Hey JP, see that extra paint brush over there, thats yours. The faster we get this basement painted right, the faster we get back on the water. Tomorrow you learn how to thru-drill a plug Jigman

Creek fishing for smallies has been surprisingly good for the last 4 or 5 weeks. 10-20 smallies a trip and upto a dozen redeye/sunfish to boot. Been getting a bunch on some smaller jig cranks. jm_small16.jpg 16 inch smallie from last weekend on a crank. Not bad for a small creek Jigman
